FONIO
What is Fonio?
Fonio (FOH-nee-oh) is one of the world’s oldest grains — grown in West Africa for over 5,000 years. The seeds are tiny, smaller than couscous, with a light, fluffy texture and a mild, nutty taste.
It grows naturally in the highlands of Guinea, without irrigation or chemicals — which makes it both deeply traditional and remarkably sustainable.
Three things to know:
-
Naturally gluten-free — a whole grain
-
Quick to cook — ready in about 5 minutes
-
Nutrient-dense — rich in the amino acids methionine and cysteine, often missing in other grains
